I'm writing this letter on behalf of TOTOM, an organization dedicated to Mathematics Teacher Education in Oregon. As a group, we ask that you reconsider the use of the Mathematics Pedagogy Praxis test (20065) as part of the requirements for the Basic Mathematics Endorsement in Oregon.

The Praxis testing has been used as an evaluation of Mathematics Knowledge for people seeking the Basic Mathematics Endorsement. The use of the Pedagogy Test was a stop-gap measure when no appropriate Middle School test was available. In the meantime, an appropriate Mathematics content test (30066) has become available and is used in Oregon for the purpose of evaluating Mathematics content knowledge for Middle and Intermediate grades.

Therefore, we recommend that the use of the Mathematics Pedagogy test (20065) be reconsidered as part of the requirements for teachers seeking the Basic Mathematics Endorsement in Oregon for two reasons:

1. An appropriate content test is now available and in use.

2. Using the Mathematics Pedagogy test for entrance to teacher preparation programs (which is now a requirement) is inappropriate. The knowledge and skills required to pass this test are included in teacher preparation programs and are not generally known to candidates at entrance.
